Grishm carries on from where we left at our travels last season. We stopped at Madhes/Terai. Where Ghar captured the essence of the place and memories, Grishm meaning summer season in Nepali encapsulates the visual observation of this part of Nepal.

Right from where we derive our season's colours rust, azure, plum, rosa, tangelo and magenta. Together with our core hues Grishm comes to life.

In Grishm we take a pause and look back at our journey, our core beliefs and what we bring forth; No fast consumerism, sustainability in design and our manufacturing process, meaningful addition to our homes. So you will see some of our most loved creations nuanced by those deep tantalizing hues.

AW19 Collection carries an undertone of 'Boho', is richly artisanal, pieces are versatile as always, working beautifully together, on its own or with others.

Oon Kids sees us introducing some beautiful pastel shades in our core designs. Those deeper hues have been balanced by natural ivory, granite, black and fresh pastels.

With Grishm we expand our floor covering range. It's been over 2 years in the making as we/our amazing women partners worked on crafting some of the best quality of felt rugs out there. We continue to innovate, experiment and create with our signature fibre 'wool felt' in our new Manalu and Asan rug.

Whether you follow 'less is more' or 'more is more' school, Grishm will serve you with beautiful ivory, grey, monochrome, soft pinks or earthy rich rust, plum and azure, with the rustic look of ombre, casual with tassel to tailored, geometric pattern, with good serving of texture to tactility of shag pile.

This year Bohemian is a broad design theme for us upon which we built our collection deriving inspiration from Nepal.

Ghar’ means Home/House in Nepali, which is the source of inspiration both figuratively and literally. Here the designer is travelling down the memory lane, childhood days and bringing in the inspiration from things surrounded by at ‘ghar’ and places been to.

“Growing up I was lucky enough to travel to many small towns and villages in all three main regions of Nepal: Himalayan, Hilly and Terai/Madhesh with distinct ethnic, indigenous communities and unique cultures and practices.

For SS18 I stopped at Madhesh. Geographically it’s the foothill of Himalayas, shares border with India, is bright and colourful, and weather is extreme hot most of the year.

Women always being integral part of our work here at Oon, inspiration was drawn from our Madhesi sisters. Bright contrasting hues of cotton saris, lightweight, breathable fabric. You don’t see so much of colours together in other region of the country. These hardworking women are involved in almost all kinds of income generating works; one of my favourites being pottery. Making clay vessels was a favorite childhood ‘game’. Pinching penny for the ‘changa’/kite, balloons at weekly markets locally referred as ‘haat’ which had the feels of a fete.

‘Ghar’ is a collage of all these memories. Gelato colours for the new Oon kids, and bright cheerful hues, tassels, in Oon Home from days in Madhesi town, new ‘pottery’ forms for our vessels.

“I grew up with the ruffle pillowcase ever since I can remember. Our traditional floor cushions invariably has ruffled covers and big tassels till date. It could be retro or trending but for many of us it feels home. It’s not just a trend it’s a classic piece.” With this collection we are building up on our existing range and it works beautifully with all other Oon pieces.

We love the tactile nature of wool and look into how we can further explore and enhance it with ‘Ghar’ with low-tech and sustainable methods, making the most of limited resources available in a similar way these gritty women have.

Like our new ‘tray’ placemat with ‘Batik’ technique to give the tie-dye effect, or even creating the ruffle by the process of felting.

This season Oon goes bolder and brighter with ‘Falgun’. Falgun is a Nepalese calendar month synonymous with the big colour festival ‘holi’, beginning of spring.

AW18 is inspired by the idea of ‘holi’- both experience and observance of it. The colors; bright and contrasting, feelings of fun and joy felt during the season are palpable. Elements of influence such as ‘Kantha’ stitching from India are subtly embedded in the collection.

Signature, a juxtaposition of carefully considered textures all work to compliment each other. Geometric patterns paired back with organic shapes, tailored stitching with natural textures and rawness of simple structure with the luxurious velvety felt.

‘Falgun’ is refined, organic and luxurious. The collection stays true to our core values. We are applying the traditional techniques and giving it the contemporary edge.

Falgun shows off our love of colours. In the previous collections we had pops of colours, this season we have taken all of our 'pop' colours and brought them together in one single collection. The colourful collection features shags, tailored stitching, raw textures and organic shapes and is laced with muted shades of hazelnut, soft pink, navy with a dash of gold and reds.

First of all, we must thank you all for the love you have given to our Christmas collection.

Inspired by the golden sunshine, crisp air during the time of the year, we kept it simple, classic and of course our signature felt textural goodness to maximum.

With the base colour ivory, there's opportunity to create layers of colours or keep it monochromatic or further extend the Aussie inspired theme. The later gets our vote clearly.

A brief felt history

According to the researchers, felt is believed to be one of the earliest textile forms (1). While there are various legends of where felt making started, some dating back to Noah's ark, popularly it's believed the process began in central Asia.

In Nepal (where our products are made) felt making is still an important part of folk tradition which has transformed into an art form. The technique was/is traditionally used to make floor mats, rugs and blankets. The rug commonly known as 'raadi' is Oon founder's first interaction with felt (which is since they landed on planet earth).

This skill of felted rug (raadi) originated from the people in the Himalayan and mountainous regions; used for making small to large floor coverings and jackets out of Yak’s wool (natural, un-dyed) for personal uses exclusively.

Eventually, this art form over the years was commercialised and applied to create different types of products.

At present this art form of making 'raadi' is at the verge of being extinct, however, at Oon we aim to continue the traditional skill with the help of artisans in contemporary forms.

So what is felt?

Felt is textile form of wool created with bare hands, soap and water. While synthetic forms are also available, we love wool for its many different beneficial properties including it being ecologically responsible.

Does felt pill?

Like any and all wool products, pilling of felt is inevitable. However, compared to your hand-tufted wool rugs it's significantly less. In homewares you can trim of the excess with a lint remover as any other wool product.

How to clean felt?

Felt is low maintenance and can be cleaned in similar ways you'd clean a wool carpet or a wool rug.

Oon’s AW17 collection is inspired from the lives of women in semi urban Nepal.

‘Mangsir’ is a Nepali calendar month. It’s late autumn.

It is when the harvest is brought in. It’s wedding season.

Women are weaving and braiding from the remains, leaves, barks of the harvest. After long days work they get dressed up for the weddings. Sequined sarees form the attire.

The collection stays true to our core values. We are applying the traditional techniques and giving it the contemporary edge.

Cashmere collection is an extension of last season. Essential and occasional pieces, clean and textural. There are star sequined pieces, light knits and adding to the rib collection the wearer is taken from autumn to winter.

Key styles include knit sets, midi-maxi lengths and layered looks. Wearer can go from slimline to fluffy, from linear to texture. All can be worn in sets.

Signature long, lean, layered and relaxed silhouettes are prominent yet updated with rib, sequins and band details.

‘Mangsir’ is refined yet encompassing, offering everyday luxury that Oon is set to deliver.

In home, the colours are monochrome with that light, airy autumn feel and layers of pastels. The beautiful texture of natural wool felt is accentuated with weaves and braids.
